The nationally acclaimed Walking Forward program in Rapid City, SD, is seeking a Program Director with formal research training and clinical exposure, ideally in the area of cancer (MD, PharmD or PhD required). Walking Forward has proven to be an innovative leader in the field of disparities research, particularly addressing the health and well-being of Native Americans in the Great Plains (10 publications, many in press). Through a NCI Cancer Disparities Research Partnership award, and in partnership with 3 rural and 1 urban Indian communities, we have established a successful and culturally competent program that addresses cancer disparities in this population though increasing access to innovative clinical trials, behavioral research, and a genetic study. Patient Navigation is a critical part of the program as well.

The Program Director is responsible for assisting the Principal Investigator (Daniel Petereit, MD) with managing and implementing NCI and other grant awards, and potentially serving as Principal Investigator/Co-Principal Investigator in future research endeavors. The incumbent will lend immediate management to a new NCI supplement award, participate in the development of new initiatives, provide strategic planning and future research design guidance as well as contribute to future projects related to Cancer research. Successful candidates will have:

  • Minimum of six to eight years of experience in research and patient care/investigational site experience
  • Experience writing or editing reports of scientific research, both for regulatory submission and for scientific publication
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment; experience collaborating with personnel with varied technical and educational backgrounds
  • Must have excellent spoken and written communication skills
Walking Forward is located within the Cancer Care Institute (CCI) of the Rapid City Regional Hospital. CCI is a technologically advanced facility that has been continuously approved as a comprehensive community hospital since 1981. The Comprehensive Cancer Program includes medical oncology, radiation oncology, clinical trial research, pharmacy, lab and imaging, quality assurance, cancer registry, and home care/hospice. CCI maintains long-standing relationships with nationally renowned research groups and works with regional health care providers to promote cancer awareness, prevention and early detection.
