Lymphedema-Glossary
Lymphedema Glossary

  • Cellulitis: A fast and serious, spreading infection of the deep tissues of the skin and muscle that causes the skin to become warm and tender and may also cause fever, chills, swollen lymph nodes, and blisters.

  • Compression garment or bandages: made in different sizes, lengths, and compression (tightness). They are also made of different materials. They are much more than an Ace Bandage and need to be fitted to the patient by a trained healthcare provider or therapist. Short-stretch bandages are also fit to the patient and the patient is taught how to put them on when they are far from a healthcare facility. Some garments are worn when exercising, or riding in a plane, but taken off at night. Others are worn for 24 hours of the day. The healthcare provider must work with the patient to find the best way for the garments to be used.
