EDUARD GAMITO 1962 - 2008

THE DASH

FIRST CAME EDUARD'S DATE OF BIRTH
THE LAST DATE IS THE DATE EDUARD LEFT US
WHAT HAS MATTERED MOST OF ALL
WAS THE SHORT DASH BETWEEN THOSE YEARS.
FOR THE DASH REPRESENTS ALL THE TIME
THAT EDUARD SPENT ALIVE ON EARTH,
AND NOW ONLY THOSE WHO LOVED AND RESPECTED HIM
KNOW - WHAT THE LITTLE LINE IS WORTH.
FOR IT MATTERS NOT, HOW MUCH WE OWN;
THE CARS, THE HOUSE, THE CASH.
WHAT MATTERS MOST IS HOW WE LIVE AND LOVE
AND HOW WE SPENT OUR DASH.

EDUARD SPENT HIS DASH BY LIVING HIS LIFE AS A GREAT MAN TO US:

WE CAN SAY THAT EDUARD WAS A MAN WITH GREAT LOVE FOR HIS FAMILY
HE WAS A GREAT MAN IN HIS LOVE FOR GOD
HE WAS A GREAT MAN IN HIS UNDERSTANDING OF OTHERS
HE WAS A GREAT MAN IN HIS RESPECT TOWARDS OTHERS AS WELL AS HIMSELF
HE WAS A GREAT MAN WHO SHOWED APPRECIATION TO OTHERS
HE WAS A GREAT MAN WHO ALWAYS WORE A SMILE
HE WAS A GREAT MAN WHO PUT OTHERS BEFORE HIMSELF
HE WAS A GREAT MAN IN HIS TEACHINGS TO OTHERS AND HIS TEACHINGS TO HIMSELF
HE WAS A GREAT MAN IN HIS CARING FOR HIS CO-WORKERS
HE WAS A GREAT MAN IN HIS QUIET ACTS OF KINDNESS
HE WAS A GREAT MAN IN HIS WRITINGS
HE WAS A GREAT MAN IN HIS FRIENDSHIPS
HE WAS A GREAT MAN IN HIS WORDS OF WISDOM
HE WAS A GREAT MAN WITH GREAT INTEGRITY
HE WAS A GREAT MAN WHO RESPECTED AND UNDERSTOOD DIVERSITY
HE WAS A GREAT MAN IN HIS LOVE FOR ALL OF US

THANK YOU EDUARD AND CATHERINE FOR CHOOSING JIM AND I AS YOUR MADRINA AND PADRINO AT YOUR WEDDING. THANK YOU FOR ALL THE SUPPORT YOU HAVE GIVEN ME PERSONALLY AND SPIRITUALLY, ESPECIALLY WHEN I DIDN'T THINK I COULD GREET EACH DAY WITH OPTIMISM WHEN JIM WAS SO SICK AND NEEDED A TRANSPLANT. THANK YOU FOR TAKING MY SON, ANTHONY, TO THE HOSPITAL AND STAYING WITH HIM WHEN HE SO DESPERATELY NEEDED A KIND WORD AND A HELPING HAND. THANK YOU FOR YOUR MANY HUGS, PRAYERS, WORDS OF WISDOM AND LOVING SPIRIT. I WILL MISS YOU DEARLY MY FRIEND. SINCERAMENTE, YOUR MADRINA SALLY TENORIO

I share all the pain with the great loss we all are facing. I cannot believe this is true, it is like losing my own brother, and it hurts. The last e-mail he sent me was just 2-3 days before that. I got some pictures I took when you guys were here and some from during the pow wow in Coeur d' Alene, ID. He brought his little girls for me to see them with their kuspuks he bought when he was here; remember he had me call in order for those when he was here. Sorry I didn't call you or get back with you soon as I should have, I was too hurt to talk to anybody cause Arlene called me 11 at night when it happened that day, I WAS SO VERY SHOCKED. He was like a brother to me, I use to call him my little brother, he reminded me so much of how my brothers treated me when I was growing up with them, he treated me with respect, never too busy if I needed his help for anything. I really feel such a great big loss when he left us. I feel sooooooo very helpless, this is hard for me, as I write tears are rolling down. Take care and god bless you all.

We were so lucky to have Ed as our ARS guy on our state-level projects. Anytime I knew he was going to be a part of the crew I found myself smiling because I knew we'd have a great time doing some good work. One of the nicest, kindest and wittiest people I have had the pleasure of working with over the years.
Many blessings to the Gamito family.

Dear Cathy and Family,
We've never met, but Ed was my colleague. Over the past several years, we worked together on the national and state Dialogue for Action conferences. I came to know Ed through emails, telephone calls, and in-person work that occurred in various locations 2-3 times a year. Ed was an absolute pleasure to work with and know. I could always count on his skill and thinking and didn't worry when he was "on the job." But more importantly, Ed was a stellar human being. His quiet, thoughtful warmth made even the difficult jobs enjoyable. I looked forward to seeing him wherever a conference might take me. Some people enter one's life only for a short time, but they leave an indelible impression on one's heart. Ed did that for me. I know I won't miss him as much as you and his loved ones will, but I will miss him. His smile will remain with me forever. May his spirit continue to touch us all.
With much warmth,
Judie Blanchard
Program Consultant

I did so much enjoy working with Ed. I admired his work, talent, energy, and dedication. It is hard to believe that he isn't still there doing the things that he did to make things work well for everyone.

Ed and I have worked together for over a decade. Ed, was always positive and thought of ways to make things happen rather than the negative. He was always constructive and caring. He loved his family and friends so much. I am presenting some of the work we did on one of our projects this weekend, and I believe that Ed would want me there. Ed, I am still in shock that you are gone and your legacy will permeate our research for decades to come.
Sincerely, E David Crawford, M.D.

PS-Ed, you were always there to fix my computer and it is broken now, divine intervention?

I had the pleasure of working with Ed for the past two years. He was a wonderful person who was always very kind and caring to everyone he came in contact with. It just doesn't seem fair that his life was cut so short. To his wife, Cathy and his five children please know that I am keeping you in my thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time. Eduard Gamito, or the Fishy, as he was known to us, will remain in my memory the most delightful, thoughtful, amusing/amazing young man of the decade. That would be the 80's.....My sister and I had occasion to work with Eduard while he was a student. The quasi law enforcement aspect of the endeavor appealed to the Fish. Combine a superior intellect, a soft heart and knowledge of the martial arts with a huge dose of silly and its Ed.

To his children, you come by it honestly. I mean your sweetness. The love of life and your fellows here on the planet as well as an exceptional spirit. I have never laughed as hard or as long than when your Dad was present. I am compelled here to revisit the silly. It is an undervalued virtue. Eduard was equally comfortable making or being the joke. So rarely do exceptional people exhibit that quality. He insured my physical safety on many occasions and here I must mention Eduard was fierce. This was more than bump and run. Weapons were in play. I never had to look over my shoulder for Ed. Making dangerous situations an adventure was Eduard's strong suit. He was a joy to know. Honest, loyal, brave, wildly intelligent. To have been his friend was a treasure. I can only smile when thinking of him. We have not met Catherine and Eduard's daughters. Nor have we seen Daniel and Phillip since they were small boys. That is only time and distance. Chuck and I send love to Eduard's wife and children. We are saddened for your loss.

Respectfully,
Bear and Chuck Shimmin

We are incredibly saddened by the news that the wonderful Ed Gamito has passed. We have had the privilege of working with Ed the past few years, most recently through Spirit of EAGLES. We have always loved working with Ed who was patient, supportive, and dedicated to ensuring that the product he developed would meet the needs of the program. He worked so diligently and was always willing to go the extra mile. Ed's kindness, gentle spirit, and warm smile will be greatly missed.
We are honored to have known him.

Cathy and family:
I met Ed several years ago through Linda B. and most recently he had been working on our Native American Programs website at Mayo. Over the past 4-6 months, I have had an opportunity to talk to him either through email or by phone on almost a weekly basis. Ed was one of the most kind and patient persons I have ever met! I'm not too computer savvy, but Ed's patience and helpfulness guided me through some, "pulling out my hair" times. I will miss his guidance and wisdom. I considered Ed my friend and am very proud to have known him. Please know that I will be thinking and praying for your family during these difficult times.

To Ed Gamito,
A true workman approved by God and to Catherine and Family and all of our friends that knew Ed. This is not the way I want to express my grief to all of you over the passing of our dear friend Ed. But I don't have everyone's phone numbers and for that I am sorry. I pray that peace comes to his family and all of you over the passing of Ed. I got to know Ed well over the past couple of years and spent much time over the phone with him. And I loved him very much. He was truly dedicated to his work and cared very much for all cancer patients. He was a dedicated to NACR, and I believe that it was his calling by our lord God. I will truly miss him. I just want you all to know that my heart goes out to all of you and others whom I do not have e-addresses. Remember that God's word says not to worry over those who have passed on for they are with the lord our God. And I truly believe he is with him. I know that is hard to accept but I believe it to be true.
May God bless all of you!
Dennis Whiterock.

Ed had been with the Cancer Center since 1996, when PLCO project manager Sheryl Ogden hired him to be the recruitment coordinator. He helped PLCO surpass its 13,000 recruitment goal, then moved on to be the retention coordinator. Ed worked closely with Dr. David Crawford, with Native American Cancer Research and with cancer researchers across Colorado and the country. Sheryl says this about him: "Ed was a big man with a huge heart. He was so thoughtful. If he saw you needed something, he would just do it. He was kind, compassionate and adored his family. He kept us all balanced, and we're feeling off-kilter without him."
He will be missed.

People say "no one is irreplaceable", but in Ed's case, they were wrong. Not only is Ed irreplaceable but also indispensable - to his family, to us, to his friends, to our projects, etc. But he has given us some things to think about and focus on as well. I don't know what we will do without him.

Ed was the Recruitment and Retention Coordinator for the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal and Ovarian (PLCO) Cancer Screening Trial and I hired him in 1996. Here is a letter I posted on his office door at PLCO shortly after hearing the devastating news...

Dear Ed,

I still cannot bring myself to believe that I will not see you again, and I keep expecting to see you come off of the elevator dragging your rolling bag, with a Starbucks cup in one hand and no coat (even in the freezing weather.) I have told so many people how lucky we were to have you here at PLCO; I just hope I told YOU!

I have always been amazed at your many talents and your willingness to pick up new things. One of the best things I ever did for PLCO was to hire you as the Recruitment Coordinator. So much of our success at PLCO is directly related to your contributions. I selfishly thought of you as belonging to PLCO when, in fact, you had so many other projects. I am just learning of some of your other accomplishments and I am astounded at how many people you touched.

Thank you Ed, for all you did for the PLCO and NLST projects. Thanks for being such a good sport and putting up with all of our silliness at staff retreats, etc. Thanks for your incredible thoughtfulness, for sharing music that you loved, for all of your wonderful ideas and creativity. Thanks for your loyalty, your compassion, your great sense of humor (even if it meant sharing a picture of me in the bunny suit at the site visit!). Thanks for putting up with the (too long) staff meetings, for all of the great retention materials that you developed, for your voice of reason. Thanks for being a sounding board for my ideas and for your unending support. I can't imagine what we will do without you, but in your honor we will do our very best. That's what you'd do. I miss you. I love you. I will not forget you. Be at peace. Sheryl

Whenever you saw that Ed was scheduled to come by the office, you're outlook on the day brightened up. You always looked forward to seeing him.

I can't believe Ed is no longer here. I miss him already. Again, so sorry for this loss-he was one of the nicest men I have ever known! And it occurred to me that one thing of comfort I have found being the eldest of four that lost their mother when she was only 47! Was that she has been able to care for us from up there. Ed will take care of those that loved him well and that he loved well. He will be one of our angels!

Dear Gamito Family,
I am a radiologist who worked with Ed on several projects in the PLCO and National Lung Screening Trial. I always enjoyed being with him. I was impressed by several things about him- his calm demeanor, his clear intelligence, his respect for others, and his patience. I never saw him flustered or angry. He always seemed comfortable in his own skin. His loss is devastating, but a small comfort may be that his outstanding qualities will live on in his children. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this sad time.

I just wanted to let you know that Ed's family and yours are in my prayers. It was a big shock when I received the call from Becky yesterday. We were all looking forward to our training with Ed. He was such a nice person, never hesitated to work out problems we were having. I know we are a long ways from you but if there is anything we can do just let us know. Please pass on our sincere sympathy to Ed's family.

Please pass on an address to send a card, and let me know if there is something SOE plans to do or if there is a common fund. Thinking especially of you, Linda, and of course, his family.

I am so sorry to hear about Ed. My last good conversation with him was in Portland in May. He was so dedicated to his work and cared so much about the work which all of us share, and we talked about his health as well.
